I'm currently squating in a cave (with high-speed internet) near Minneapolis, MN, US, NA.

My Story

I'm a volunteer at The Uptake and have been working here since August 2008.  My role is an information technology, network and infrastucture support person.  I've also  picked up a camera to be a citizen journalist. .

I love information, knowledge, computers, science and technology.  I've been learning around computers for quite a long time, since 1981.  My first personal computer (that was "mine") was a Commodore 64 computer in about 1983.  I held out for the C64 because I thought the VIC 20 was stupid with only a 24 character wide screen. Both were made by Commodore International. The Commodore 64 had a whopping 40 character wide screen.  When the IBM PC came out it had a 80 character wide screen. Incredible! The computers before the C64 were a family owned Ohio Scientific Superboard II based C-1P and  C-4P.  We had both of them sitting in my Dad’s office and I remember playing more often with the C-4P.

As an Information Technology (IT) person I work on the organization's  infrastructure and technology that it will use to further it's goals, in this case video-based citizen journalism.  I help with things like system administration, network administration, quaility assurance, and network install.  I set up and supervised a computer network that we used during the Republican National Convention (RNC) in September 2008  with great success.

I'm working on some web programming for on the website, HTML and PHP scripting.  I helped our executive producer convert online database records to a ical feed.  Any short coding project Mike McIntee has, I do. We want to make The Uptake the best platform in the world for citizen journalism.

We are looking for  talented, entrepreneurial, independent and critically thinking citizens like YOU to work with our a team of producers and editors to help re-invent American media  If you want to change media forever, give us a call. My email is matthew(dot)johnson[at]theuptake.org.  Our executive director is Jason Barnett at jason(dot)barnett[at]theuptake.org You can find more about The Uptake staff on the about page.
